Challenging Behaviour – National Strategy Group (CB-NSG)

Membership Information

Background

The National Strategy Group was initiated by the Challenging Behaviour Foundation (registered charity) who identified key stakeholders and invited specific people to join the group. A steering group was also formed to plan and co-ordinate the group.

At the launch meeting in November 2008, members of the group were encouraged to nominate others who are influential in influencing change on behalf of people with learning disabilities who are perceived as challenging to services. The steering group reviewed the nominations and those who were accepted as members were invited to join the group.

Group members who are unable to attend a meeting are able to nominate a representative from their organisation to attend on their behalf.

We have produced this document to clarify the membership process as we are likely to receive more applications and need to keep the group to a manageable size whilst ensuring key stakeholders from across the UK are engaged with the group.

We will therefore have two types of membership:

Core members:

• Will be active and committed to the work of the CB-NSG, attend all national meetings and receive all information circulated by e-mail.
• Core members who are unable to attend meetings will be expected to nominate an appropriate deputy to attend on their behalf, where possible (the deputy will revert to associate membership after the meeting).
• Will develop work plans, contribute to delivery and have capacity (and if applicable) support from line management/organisation.
• Core members will be representative of all key stakeholders.
• A completed application form is required
• Will disseminate information to their networks and contacts

Associate members:

Will be added to a mailing list to receive information from the group circulated by e-mail. Associate members can input to the work of the group via telephone, post, email and the CBF website. To join the CB-NSG as an associate member e-mail: nationalstrategygroup@thecbf.org.uk or Tel: 01634 838739 with your request to become an associate member (application form not required).

Process for new core members

1.) Any person nominated by a group member or any person who nominates themselves to join as a core member of the CB-NSG will be asked to complete a membership application form.

2.) The forms should be returned to:

E-mail: nationalstrategygroup@thecbf.org.uk
Post: Challenging Behaviour – National Strategy Group (CB-NSG), Challenging Behaviour Foundation, The Old Courthouse, New Road Avenue, Chatham, Kent, ME4 6BE.

3.) Once an application has been received it will be held by the Challenging Behaviour Foundation until the next steering group meeting. Meeting dates are available on the Challenging Behaviour Foundation website: www.challengingbehaviour.org.uk

4.) The Steering Group will review the information on the application and the CB-NSG membership at that point in time. They may also contact other members of the National Strategy Group who share a similar background in order to reach a decision.

5.) The applicant will be informed of the decision as soon as possible after the meeting.

6.) If the application is turned down, the applicant will be offered the opportunity to be an associate member and be provided with contact details of a core member who shares their area of expertise.

7.) The steering group reserves the right to invite people, including existing associate members, who they feel will fill gaps in experience or expertise which will benefit the National Strategy Group.

8.) The membership process will be reviewed as necessary.
