The Challenging Behaviour Foundation wants to see children and adults with severe learning disabilities, who are described as having challenging behaviour, having the same life opportunities as everyone else, including home life, education, employment and leisure.
Some children and adults with severe learning disabilities typically display behaviour which may put themselves or others at risk, or which may prevent the use of ordinary community facilities or a normal home life. This behaviour may be in the form of aggression, self injury, stereotyped behaviour or disruptive and destructive behaviours. These behaviours are not under the control of the individual concerned and are largely due to the individual’s lack of ability to communicate.
Note: Learning Disability (sometimes called intellectual disability or mental handicap) is generally described as being mild, moderate or severe. While anyone with a learning disability may at times display challenging behaviour, the work of the CBF is primarily aimed at helping those with severe learning disabilities. Severe learning disability is a developmental disability and refers to individuals who have either no speech or limited communication and require support with daily living skills such as dressing and eating.
“What a tremendous relief to finally find an organisation after six years of struggle that not only understands the kinds of problems that challenging behaviour can create for the family but also is able to offer practical advice…”
